After losing in the 2026 NBA Finals, the San Antonio Spurs are going into the 2026-27 season as one of the top dogs. Everyone knows them as contenders now because a lot of people would argue that they caught the league by surprise in the previous campaign.
Now that they are under a proverbial microscope, one of the Spurs' problems has become apparent to a lot of people. ESPN's NBA experts have definitely looked into it, and it could truly pose a big problem for the Spurs.
The Spurs' frontcourt depth could be a big issue in the 2026-27 NBA season
When it comes to the Spurs' frontcourt, there are a couple of players the team can trust. Victor Wembanyama headlines that group, but he also has Julian Champagnie, Harrison Barnes, Luke Kornet, and new arrival Tobias Harris with him.
Despite the excellence of that five-man group, the depth does look a bit thin, especially when compared to other elite teams. If the Spurs want to compete for a championship, they must find ways to strengthen that part of the rotation.

Rookies Tarris Reed Jr. and Jayden Quaintance could play roles in the rotation, but it is hard to expect them to be contributors in their first NBA season.
However, this Spurs team does have an environment where young players are empowered to make a difference. ESPN's experts certainly see this frontcourt depth as a big issue for the reigning Western Conference champions.
"Outside of Wembanyama, free agent addition Tobias Harris and backup center Luke Kornet, San Antonio is relatively thin in the frontcourt," ESPN's Michael C. Wright said about the Spurs' lack of frontcourt depth, particularly in the power forward and center positions.
It will be an interesting situation for the Spurs to track. Considering Wembanyama will miss some games here and there, they have to address this internally or through some savvy roster moves if they want to win a title.
