The Sporting News Top 25 High School Football Rankings: Mater Dei 2024 National Champions

The 2024 high school football season has wrapped up across the country and it's time to take a look at the final Sporting News Top 25 National Rankings.

Mater Dei (California) is no stranger to national championships and completed another dominant run in 2024 to finish No. 1 in our rankings. The Monarchs picked up strong out-of-state victories and cruised through the Trinity League before beginning the Southern Section playoff run. They got a strong test from rival St. John Bosco in the Southern Section Division 1 championship before beating De La Salle for their second straight CIF Open Division state title.

North Crowley (Texas) and Milton (Georgia) also finished as undefeated state champions in powerhouse states Texas and Georgia, slotting in behind Mater Dei in the final national rankings.

Final Top 25 High School Football Rankings

1. Mater Dei (CA) (13-0)

Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and Chris Henry Jr. led Mater Dei to a perfect 13-0 season

Mater Dei used a big second half to fly past De La Salle 37-15 in the CIF State Open Division championship game. The Monarchs have now claimed five state championships since 2017 and extended their winning streak to 19 games. Mater Dei defeated Corona Centennial, Bishop Gorman (NV) and St. Frances Academy (MD) in non-league play before beating rival St. John Bosco twice.

2. North Crowley (TX) (16-0)

North Crowley ran the gauntlet in Texas, finishing a perfect season while averaging 54 points per game. They closed out the season by beating Duncanville and Westlake in consecutive weeks. Colorado-signee Quentin Gibson surpassed 2,000 receiving yards and scored 28 touchdowns for the UIL 6A D1 champions.

3. Milton (GA) (15-0)

Milton opened the 2024 season with significant wins over Buford and American Heritage (FL) before rolling through their competition in Georgia. They closed the season by scoring 56 points in three consecutive wins, all by 21 points or more, completing an unbeaten season and a GHSA 5A title.

4. Bishop Gorman (NV) (11-1)

Bishop Gorman loaded up their non-league slate, picking up wins over Kahuku (HI), St. Thomas Aquinas (FL) and Orange Lutheran (CA) while losing at Mater Dei 31-15. They had no problem against in-state competition, allowing 24 total points over their final eight games to capture a fourth straight Nevada state title. 

5. Duncanville (TX) (13-1)

Duncanville won 13 straight games this season before dropping a 36-34 battle against eventual state champion North Crowley in the semifinals. Alabama-bound quarterback Keelon Russell, the top rated 2025 recruit in Texas, finished the season with 4,177 passing yards and 55 touchdowns.

6. St. John Bosco (CA) (11-2)

St. John Bosco opened the season with a win over Chaminade-Madonna (FL) and relied heavily on underclassmen across the field. Both losses came against rival Mater Dei, including a 31-24 loss to the Monarchs in the Southern Section title game.

7. Grayson (GA) (14-1)

Grayson dropped their season opener to Collins Hill 20-19 and then reeled off 14 straight win. They took down previously unbeaten Carrollton 38-24 to win the GHSA 6A title, their fourth state championship.

8. Chaminade-Madonna (FL) (13-2)

The Lions sputtered early with two losses to open the season. They then embarked on a 13-game winning streak that included a dominant 42-7 win over Clearwater Central Catholic in the FHSAA 1A title game. Junior Jasen Lopez had 1,300 receiving yards and found the end zone 17 times.

9. Archbishop Spalding (MD) (12-0)

Archbishop Spalding took down Archbishop Hoban and DeMatha the first two weeks of the season and then proceeded to go on a run that saw them allow 10 total points over the final 10 games. Quarterback Malik Washington, a Maryland-signee, tossed 22 touchdown passes and added eight more on the ground.

10. Carrollton (GA) (14-1)

Carrollton took down Buford in the GHSA semifinals but saw their unbeaten run come to an end at the hands of Grayson in the 6A state title. Quarterback Julian Lewis, who has signed with Colorado, tossed 144 touchdown passes over his three varsity seasons.

11. Venice (FL) (14-1)

Venice averaged 50 points per game this season, only dropping a game to IMG Academy in October. The Indians made a statement in the FHSAA 7A title game, beating Lake Mary 52-19.

12. Bergen Catholic (NJ) (11-1)

The Crusaders dropped their season opener to IMG Academy before reeling off 11 wins to finish the season. They needed overtime to beat St. Joseph Regional in the semifinal round before beating Don Bosco Prep in the championship.

13. Corona Centennial (CA) (9-3)

Corona Centennial started and ended their season with losses to the nation's top team Mater Dei. They picked up wins over Liberty (AZ) and Mission Viejo along the way while making their way to the Southern Section Division 1 semifinal round.

14. Liberty (AZ) (12-1)

Liberty lost to Corona Centennial in September's Honor Bowl but had no trouble with Arizona competition. The Lions won 11 of 12 in-state game by double digits, beating Basha 35-17 for the AIA Open Division title.

15. Corner Canyon (UT) (13-1)

Corner Canyon took down IMG Academy (FL) 35-34 in week two and really found their offense in the back half of the season, scoring 30 points or more in each of their last seven games. The Chargers beat Lone Peak in the Utah 6A state title, getting redemption from their only loss during the season.

16. North Shore (TX) (14-1)

North Shore cruised to their first 14 wins of the season before falling to Westlake in the UIL playoffs. Quarterback Kaleb Bailey tossed 31 touchdowns passes and added nine more on the ground while averaging eight yards per carry.

17. De La Salle (CA) (12-1)

De La Salle put together an unbeaten regular season and captured their 32nd straight North Coast Section title with a 10-7 victory over Pittsburg. The Spartans fell to top-ranked Mater Dei 37-15 in the CIF State Open Division title game.

18. Mission Viejo (CA) (10-1)

Mission Viejo put together a dominant season in the Southern Section before falling to Corona Centennial in the playoffs, 25-20. Boise State-signee Jaden Williams finished the year with 23 sacks.

19. St. Frances Academy (MD) (8-3)

Few teams travel like the Panthers. Over a three week period, St. Frances traveled to Orange Lutheran (CA), Duncanville (TX) and Mater Dei (CA). They finished the year with six straight wins including back-to-back victories over Clearwater Central Catholic (FL) and IMG Academy (FL).

20. DeMatha (MD) (10-1)

After a season-opening loss to Archbishop Spalding, DeMatha reeled off 10 consecutive wins. The Stags held their final 10 opponents to 15 points or less, beating Our Lady of Good Counsel for the WCAC title.

21. East St. Louis (IL) (13-1)

The Flyers only blemish this season was a 14-13 overtime loss to IMG Academy (FL) in October. They bounced back with consecutive shutouts and cruised through the competition, beating Geneva 48-28 in the IHSA 6A title game at the end of November.

22. Dutch Fork (SC) (13-0)

Dutch Fork recorded six shutouts during their perfect season, allowing 94 total points. The Silver Foxes closed out the year with a 35-21 win over Summerville in the SCHSL AAAAA title game. Senior running back Maurice Anderson rushed for three touchdowns in the championship, finishing the year with 22.

23. Buford (GA) (12-2)

Buford opened the season with a 13-10 loss to Milton and closed the year with a loss to Carrollton in the GHSA semifinal round. They won 12 straight games in between the two losses. Tennessee-bound running back Justin Baker averaged 10 yards per carry and found the end zone 17 times.

24. Grimsley (NC) (16-0)

Grimsley outscored their opponents by 549 points over their 16 games. Senior running back Mitchell Summers rushed for 2,356 yards and 47 touchdowns, averaging more than eight yards per carry.

25. American Heritage (FL) (12-2)

American Heritage lost to Millton and Chaminade-Madonna in one score games over the first three weeks of the season. They put together a strong end of the season that concluded in a FHSAA 4A title win over Jones, 41-31.
