HBO MAX‘s The Pitt took home the coveted top honor of Outstanding Drama Series at the 2025 Emmy awards. Not only that, but series star and EP Noah Wyle earned his first ever Emmy award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. The addictive ode to America’s frontline medical workers managed to beat other beloved dramas like Andor, Severance, Slow Horses, Paradise, The White Lotus, The Diplomat, and The Last of Us, firmly setting up the HBO MAX show as one of TV’s biggest critical and commercial hits.
The Pitt is set in the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital’s emergency room and follows one harrowing shift in real time, each episode representing another hour of an absolutely grinding day. The show is led by Wyle’s Dr. Michael “Robby” Robinavitch, the experienced, but traumatized head of the unit who is grappling with his own unprocessed grief on this specific day.
The Pitt won early acclaim for its gritty realism, exceptional acting, and harrowing third act, which followed the ER in the wake of a mass casualty event.
The final two awards of the night were for Best Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Best Drama. While some awards insiders were pointing to Severance‘s clean up at last week’s Creative Arts Emmys, the groundswell around The Pitt could be felt first when Katherine LaNasa edged out a star-studded field to win Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
During his acceptance speech, Noah Wyle tipped his hat to everyone who worked on The Pitt from series creator R. Scott Gemmill to the background actors. “You bring your A game everyday, which inspires me to bring mine,” Wyle said.
“Mostly, to anybody who’s going on shift tonight, or coming off shift tonight, thank you for being in that job,” Wyle said, directly to the frontline workers who inspire The Pitt. “This is for you!”
