The New York Yankees have some of the best odds to land Toronto Blue Jays infielder Bo Bichette this offseason. In all likelihood, as The New York Post’s Dylan Svoboda explains, Bichette will stick with the Jays.
If Bichette doesn’t, and he does decide to jump to the AL East rival Yankees, Svoboda believes it can be bad news for Anthony Volpe. Jazz Chisolm wouldn’t be a problem, being that he could be moved anywhere on the field.
“After Anthony Volpe’s struggles in 2025 and with the versatility of Jazz Chisholm, the Bombers could slide Bichette into either spot next season and beyond,” Svoboda wrote.
Volpe, once deemed the future at a position that’s held near and dear in the Tri-State Area, hit .212 in 2025, regressing 41 percentage points from the 2024 season in 98 fewer at-bats. There’s probably still a role as a backup on the team in 2026 if Brian Cashman can shock the world and nab Bichette, or if he pursues a Ha-Seong Kim or a reunion with Isiah Kiner-Falefa.
Even if Cashman doesn’t land a big name, José Caballero appears to be in much better graces with Aaron Boone. Caballero is under team control through the 2030 season on a cheaper deal than Volpe.
“I feel like with Caballero, we’re in much better position there that we have like a premium guy over there that can handle the position and do things. So yeah,” Boone said on a recent “Talkin’ Yanks” segment.
Volpe falling behind two different shortstops would be crushing for the Manhattan native who went to high school in North Jersey. While he’d likely want to remain in Pinstripes, it’s Cashman’s call to make.
Certainly, Boone’s recent comments don’t bode well for Volpe. Neither is the Yankees being connected to Bichette’s free agency in any capacity.
