The BYU Cougars are in the driver's seat in the Big 12 so far this season, and could even have a shot at the College Football Playoff this season.

A big reason for the Cougars success so far is how well quarterback Bear Bachmeier has been playing. Through BYU's first five games, he's thrown for 1,033 yards with eight touchdowns and just one interception. He's rushed for 239 yards and four scores on the ground.

But earlier this season during a game against Arizona, Bachmeier went viral after Fox Sports announcer Robert Griffin III said on-air that Bear and his family grew up having "naked family dinners."

Bear Bachmeier's naked family dinner story

Late in the fourth quarter of BYU's game against Arizona, Griffin, along with play-by-play announcer Connor Onion, were on the call. RGIII noticed Bachmeier's mother, April, in the stands.

He then proceeded to say that he wanted to ask Bear about a story he told RGIII in the week leading up to the game about alleged naked family dinners that he would have growing up in a truly bizarre exchange.

“He told us at the dinners…sometimes they just take their clothes off”

RGIII: “[Bear] he told us that at the dinners, you know, sometimes they just, they just take the clothes off and they walk around naked. You naked at your dinners with the family?

Onion: “Do I have to answer that?”

RGIII: “You don’t have to answer that because I don’t think anybody listening right now really kind of does that.”

Bear Bachmeier family dinners go viral

Unsurprisingly, the clip went completely viral on social media:

BYU starting QB Bear Bachmeier and his family reportedly eat dinner together completely NAKED, according to FOX broadcaster Robert Griffin III.

I tried ordering the Bear Bachmeier bowl at Chipotle and was told it was a crime to try to eat naked within their establishment. #weirdo

In honor of Bear tonight, I will be watching the game ass naked. I will be at a bar as well

Got a dinner invite from BYU quarterback Bear Bachmeier? Read the fine print. Per RG3, his family “sometimes” dines sans clothes. Bear hasn’t confirmed.@LastNights_Game @substack

Why RGIII's story was 'out of context'

In a weekly podcast with KSL Sports, BYU beat writers Mitch Harper and Nate Slack discussed the exchange with RGIII, adding that it was likely a misspeak by the broadcaster that didn't include the full context.

He also added that when Bachmeier is not in front of a camera for interviews, he's a "funny guy" and maybe he was saying something humorous that RGIII took literally.

"When you’re away from the camera, he’s kind of a funny guy," Harper explains. "And maybe he was just saying something funny that maybe RGIII took literally and I mean again like do your thing Bear, like I don’t care like it’s strange. I mean, I can honestly say that I’ve never sat in the nude with my family eating a dinner."

Bachmeier's older brother, Hank Bachemier, who played quarterback at Boise State, Louisiana Tech and Wake Forest from 2019-2024, even made a joke about it on social media, saying :

Was just talking about this throw at the dinner table the other night https://t.co/MYXZS7riPf

RGIII responded to Bachmeier's post and said that his story was in fact "taken out of context," and that his story was about boys being boys:

🤣 this story got blown way out of proportion and out of context.
Love the Bachmeier Family and Bear is a funny guy. The funny dinner story he told us had nothing to do with his Mom or sister. Just the boys being boys.

— Robert Griffin III (@RGIII) September 24, 2026

Unless RGIII calls another one of BYU's games this season, we may truly never know what he meant here. Boys will be boys is the best explanation we'll get.
