In case you haven't heard, eyeshadow has made a major comeback in 2025.
However, we're ditching bold halo eyes and dramatic cut-crease looks for one-and-done shadows, diffused, light-reflecting shimmers, and monochromatic styles. That's according to beauty and lifestyle influencer Kat James.
James’s one million TikTok followers can’t get enough of her beauty tips, especially her go-to eyeshadow techniques for mature skin and hooded eyelids.
If you're of a certain age, or even just feel some type of way about your eyelids and believe eyeshadow is no longer for you, James proves it still can be.
E! asked her for her best tips, tricks, and techniques to create a flawless eye look—no matter your age.
“The best eye makeup for mature skin enhances the eyes rather than overpowers them,” says the beauty influencer. The key to a good makeup look is the right canvas, which you can achieve with a lightweight eyeshadow primer.
This first step “smooths out texture and helps shadow grip, especially if you’re dealing with fine lines or a bit of lid creasing,” she explains.
You may be wondering: What are the best eyeshadows for mature eyes? The licensed aesthetician told E!, “mature lids often have a little more movement or texture, so avoid heavy shimmer or glitter, which can settle into fine lines."
She suggests sticking to cream formulas or silky powders in satin or matte finishes for the best look.
“I’m a big fan of cream shadows in stick or pot form—they’re easy, buildable, and super flattering,” raves James. We found some great (and affordable) options below from Moira Cosmetics and Jason Wu Beauty.
In terms of colors, she suggests opting for taupes, a soft bronze shade, or even a subtle plum hue. These add definition without overpowering the eye.
When applying shadow, she recommends blending a mid-tone shade slightly above your natural crease to lift the eye, and gently blending to avoid harsh lines.
If you're dealing with hooded eyelids, the trick is to shift your placement. “Instead of applying color directly in the natural crease (which can disappear when your eyes are open), apply your transition shade just above the crease, where it will still be visible," she advises.
"Use a slightly deeper tone on the outer third of the lid, then blend it upward and outward—think soft lift, not hard angles," James says.
Additionally, the TikTok star says to avoid heavy liner or dark shadow along the lower lash line, which can pull the eyes down. Instead, pop a little light shimmer or brightness in the inner corner to open up the eye.
Now that you've read up on all of James’s best tips and techniques for applying eyeshadow, it's time to stock up on some new makeup!
