Shyne, the former rapper-turned-politician born Jamal Barrows, shares a story of redemption in The Honorable Shyne, premiering on Hulu on Monday (Nov. 18).
Born in Belize and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., the then budding rapper’s career was sidelined after being sentenced to a decade in prison stemming from a New York City nightclub shooting in 1999. He served eight years before being released in 2009.
Shyne maintains that he was “absolutely set up to be the fall guy” for his label head, Sean “Diddy” Combs. Although Combs was briefly arrested after the shooting, he was never charged and denied Shyne’s claims in a statement released through his rep last week. “Mr. Combs categorically denies Mr. Barrow’s allegations, including any suggestion that he orchestrated Mr. Barrow to ‘take the fall’ or ‘sacrificed’ him by directing witnesses to testify against him. These claims are unequivocally false.”
Combs, 55, is currently behind bars on racketeering and sex trafficking charges.
In the nearly two-hour documentary, helmed by director Marcus A. Clarke and the Andscape, Shyne details growing up in Belize, moving to Brooklyn, signing to Bad Boy Records, going to prison and ultimately starting a new chapter after his release.
Shyne’s friends, family and colleagues appear in the documentary including his parents, Frances Myvette and Dean Barrow, music executive Kevin Liles, Charlamagne tha God, Faith Evans and Noreaga.
The documentary also features footage of the former music mogul and opens with a conversation between Combs and Shyne filmed in 2021.
