Lava Citadel is the latest Void Abyss boss fight in The First Descendant. It’s a different variant of the Molten Fortress and features new attacks and a lot more HP. The regular variant of the boss has over 800 million health, while the hard-mode boss stands at two billion. That said, the addition of the new Ancestors mods and new Trigger modules can make the fight easy.
This guide will teach you everything about the Lava Citadel in The First Descendant. If you’re new, we recommend picking up Hailey for a much easier time while fighting the boss. She received a massive damage buff in the recent update.
All you need to know about Lava Citadel in The First Descendant: Attacks and how to dodge
Here are all the attacks that you may face during the fight against Lava Citadel in The First Descendant. Note that the names are descriptions of attacks, as they don’t officially have one. It’s a fire-type boss, so Descendants like Hailey or Viessa will be at an advantage.
Missile/Meteor Barrage
Don't forget to look up (Image via Nexon)As soon as the fight starts, the boss will fire missiles from its back. They don’t track you, so simply moving away from your current location is a good counter against this attack. Occasionally, during rage, the boss will shoot flaming meteors that are similar to the missile, but deal more damage.
Lava Beam
Jump over the beam (Image via Nexon)The boss will fire a concentrated beam of lava in the front. The easiest way to steer clear is to jump over it or roll away. An alternative is not to stay in front of the boss.
Lava Laser
Stay clear of the turrets (Image via Nexon)Bosses in The First Descendant are crafty, and if you constantly flank the boss, it will use turrets to fire multiple lasers in the surrounding area. The laser goes vertical, so spot the turrets on its back and steer clear of them.
Lava Ring
Two types of lava rings (Image via Nexon)There are two types of Lava Rings you’ll come across during the fight. The first one expands outwards from a floating orb in the arena. Break it to prevent the attack. The second spawns after the boss does a squat animation, and it shrinks inwards. Grapple over it to avoid damage.
Exploding Ring
The red AoE is the explosion area (Image via Nexon)The boss will erupt lava in an AoE around its body. Look for a red marker and get out as soon as possible. This 3-hit attack starts with the first one occurring close to the boss, followed by the second one a little away, and finally the third blast in the previous position. To avoid it, stay on the edge and move accordingly.
Orbital Strike
The shrinking ring is the explosion timer (Image via Nexon)A laser locks onto your character and drops a projectile that deals AoE damage. Until the very last moment, the laser will track you, so keep moving to dodge the attack at the final moments.
Nuke Orb
Break the pillars to prevent the explosion (Image via Nexon)Every boss has an ultimate attack in The First Descendant, and in the case of Lava Citadel, it digs into the floor and charges a lava orb on its back. Once fully charged, it will consume the orb to create an AoE explosion dealing massive damage. You can survive this phase by having a lot of HP or shields, but to prevent it, break the three pillars around the boss and stun it for a few seconds.
Lava Citadel combat tips in The First Descendant
The lava will slowly engulf the arena (Image via Nexon)Throughout the fight, the boss can also spawn minions, which are a good source of ammo, HP, and MP orbs. They don’t deal much damage, but they can stun you out of an attack, so be aware of your surroundings.
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind before and during the fight with Lava Citadel in The First Descendant:
- MP economy: One of the main issues you’ll face is constantly running out of MP on Regular descendants. Luckily, it is also an easy one to solve. Use a Reactor with Skill Cost reduction, along with MP recovery stats.
- The floor is lava: As you chip away at the boss’s health, it will start drowning the arena with lava, restricting the zone where you fight. This comes in addition to constantly creating lava pits while walking.
- Keep your distance: Apart from dropping lava while walking, the boss will deal AoE fire damage during the nuke phase. While breaking the pillars, try to stay away from the Lava Citadel. Note that you can stay close to the pillars.
- Hit weak points: The most obvious advice, but with two billion HP, you’ll want to target the weak points to as much damage as possible to complete the fight within the 10-minute time frame. That said, some Descendants can take it down within seconds.
Apart from that, all you really need to do is look at the boss and be ready for the next attack. Challenging it a few times will give you an idea of what attack is coming next.
