The Cleveland Cavaliers selected and then traded Alex Karaban to the Sacramento Kings

The Cleveland Cavaliers were on the clock for the 29th overall pick of the 2026 NBA Draft. With that pick, Alex Karaban from the University of Connecticut was selected. Karaban, a 6'8 forward, was a major contributor for UConn for the last four seasons and was a key piece in their back-to-back National Championships in 2023 and 2024. He's a perimeter forward with a good three-point shot, not exactly something the Cavaliers needed, and it's why, technically, they didn't draft him.

Just prior to the pick, the Cavs sent the 29th overall pick to the Sacramento Kings, who then took Karaban. Sacramento, meanwhile, sent the Cavs the No. 34 overall pick in the second round of the 2026 draft, in addition to a future second-rounder.

The move then allows the Cavs to build up a little extra draft capital while not entirely missing out on a quality pick in the 2026 edition of the NBA Draft.

While on paper this looks like a massive drop, going from the first round of an NBA draft to the second round may not always be a recommended move, but as the Cavs are only really drafting five spots later, the amount of talent available won't be much different. It's not as if the Cavs had a top-five pick and traded that for two second-round picks. The talent differential would be a massive drop-off. That's not the case here, so the move is actually pretty practical. Especially how this impacts their future financial situation.

It's not a sexy move, but it's a practical one, especially with how robust their payroll is. The second round may not bring in a lot of high-profile stars of the game, but it can provide a decent depth piece at worst, and that alone can help ease the Cavaliers' financial burden down the line. As for the second round, rumors have surrounded the Cavs for weeks about their focus on a true big, and with guys like Henri Veesaar still on the board, they could seemingly land a decent prospect still, while also bolstering their draft stock for the future.
