The San Francisco 49ers just gave quarterback Brock Purdy a five-year extension worth up to $265 million. On average, he will make $53 million per year on the deal with $181 million fully guaranteed. The Houston Texans are likely looking at this and cringing because they know the price for C.J. Stroud's eventual extension.
The Texans will all but certainly pick up Stroud's fifth-year option for the 2027 season, meaning his eventual extension won't kick in until the 2028 season. Considering the fact that Purdy just got $53 million per year, and Dak Prescott currently makes $60 million per year, Stroud's deal will be in the northern part of that territory.
Stroud could go the Josh Allen route and take a bit less money, but still be one of the top-paid quarterbacks in the game. Allen took a deal worth $55 million per year, but with record-breaking guaranteed money. Or he could chase a record-breaking deal in terms of average annual value.
Regardless, Stroud will certainly go to the negotiating table saying that Purdy's deal is the minimum, and he'll almost certainly get more than that.
