For the second straight weekend, Waco Midway claimed a Texas UIL state championship.
The Panthers won the UIL 6A Division I baseball title on Saturday with a 6-2 win against Humble Atascocita at the Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Midway’s first baseball title in 22 years. That win came exactly a week after Midway’s softball team won state in Austin.
Midway (33-8) led from start to finish, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. Atascocita (32-13-2) cut it to a run by scoring twice in the top of the second but got no closer, as the Panthers added a run in the third and two more runs in the sixth on RBI singles from Jackson Goldstritch and TJ Woodson.
Tyler Seith began the scoring in the first for Midway with a two-run single, coming around to score on Canyon Martin’s RBI double.
Woodson, Dru Ohmstede, Martin and David Litle each had two-hit games for Midway.
Brody Potts was the winning pitcher, raising his record to 9-0 after going 4 2/3 innings in relief and allowing no runs on three hits, striking out four.
Kaleb Thomas and Nick Dykes each had RBIs and a base hit for Atascocita.
In the UIL 6A Division II title game earlier on Saturday, Humble Kingwood edged Tomball, 5-4, the Mustangs’ first championship in 20 years. Kingwood trailed 2-1 entering the top of the fifth before scoring four runs that inning to take the lead for good.
Kingwood (39-4) got RBI singles that inning from Brian Schumacher, Braden Fuentes and Nick Spetter, as well as Joshua York getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
Schumacher, Graham Charboneau, Spetter and Bryce Baker each had two-hit games for Kingwood.
Ben Mayorga was the winning pitcher, raising his record to 11-2 as he went 4 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits, striking out four. Ryder Renfro pitched the final 2 1/3 innings to get the save, allowing no runs on two hits, striking out one.
Four players for Tomball (34-7-1) also had two-hit games: CJ Sampson, Brycen Romberg, Brady Burrow and Gehrig Heckathorn.
