Texas Tech went on the road and made a statement with a 34–10 victory over Utah, a performance head coach Joey McGuire called one of his proudest.
“Man, we just came into a place that very few people come into and win games,” McGuire said. “Y’all know my woes as a head coach on the road. We’ve had a tough time. I thought our guys handled it like pros with an early kick and man, I couldn’t be more proud of what we did today.”
Quarterback Behren Morton left the game following a violent first-half hit, but McGuire quickly reassured his status. “He’s good. He was in the locker room, gave me a big hug, said congratulations,” McGuire said. “He’ll be back and be ready to go. He didn’t want to come out. He kept saying…I’m good. Leave me alone.’ That’s just who he is.”

— Texas Tech Football (@TexasTechFB) September 20, 2025Freshman Will Hammond answered the call, throwing for 169 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 61 more. “He’s a dude, man,” McGuire said. “If you walk on that field and you’re wearing the Double T, there’s only one way to play. And I thought he did a great job. We were able to take some one-on-one shots and win enough to really stretch the lead and win the game.”
McGuire credited his defense’s four takeaways as the turning point. “Every single day I send something about takeaways to the players,” he explained. “This morning I sent a 30-second video of Peanut Tillman. When you’re playing a game like this and it’s going to be such a defensive battle, every extra possession makes such a huge difference. And today it did.”
“There’s a lot of things said about our team and the cost of the roster,” McGuire added. “I would challenge anybody to have a closer locker room. These guys care more about each other, and it shows up in tight games.”
