Texas Tech quarterback Will Hammond received terrible news after a solid start. The redshirt freshman tore the ACL in his right knee and will miss the rest of the season, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.
Hammond exited during the second quarter of Texas Tech's 42-0 win over Oklahoma State on Saturday. He remained out due to the injury. The Red Raiders' backup signal-caller was making his second start in place of Behren Morton, who has been nursing a leg injury.
Beyond Hammond and Morton, third-string quarterback Mitch Griffis will likely get the start at Kansas State on Saturday. He replaced Hammond to finish the game, throwing for 172 yards and two touchdowns.
Texas Tech hits a pivotal stretch in the final four weeks. Even without Hammond available, they have momentum with the program's first shutout win over a Big 12 opponent since 2005.
Griffs will likely be backed up by Morton, who continues to recover and is an emergency option.
