Texas QB Arch Manning could return under center this weekend.
The former five-star passer was listed as questionable on Wednesday’s SEC injury report after suffering a concussion last week against Mississippi State. Avoiding the “doubtful” designation is an encouraging sign ahead of Saturday’s matchup with No. 9 Vanderbilt.
Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian said during the SEC teleconference that Manning practiced Wednesday, but remains in concussion protocol. Sarkisian also noted that his QB has shown continued progression through required steps before being cleared.
If Manning cannot play, Matthew Caldwell would start. The Longhorns backup replaced Manning in overtime against Mississippi State and threw a 10-yard touchdown to Emmett Mosley V to seal the 45-38 win.
Despite the setback, Manning has been efficient this season, completing 67 percent of his passes for 1,845 yards and 14 touchdowns.
No. 20 Texas and Vanderbilt kick off Saturday at Noon ET on ABC.
