Texas' Arch Manning dethroned as top college QB despite being projected first overall pick

The Texas Longhorns football team is gearing up for former five-star recruit Arch Manning to begin his first season as the starting quarterback. Manning is closely tied to some of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play in the NFL: his uncles, Eli and Peyton Manning. Texas has done everything in its power to set Manning up for success.

In his first two seasons, Manning sat behind now-Dolphins quarterback Quinn Ewers. However, when given the opportunity, Manning made the most of it. He has all the tools to be great under head coach Steve Sarkisian and for the Longhorns. Manning is projected by many to be the first overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft.

“Manning is currently the betting favorite to go first overall in 2026, with +200 odds at DraftKings. If he does go first overall, he'll follow in the footsteps of Uncle Peyton (first overall pick in 1998) and Uncle Eli (first overall pick in 2004),” Michael David Smith wrote.

Despite being expected to go first overall, there is some buzz that Manning might stay at Texas for another season.

“The word from people that have been down there visiting Texas for scouting visits has been that they expect Arch to be there for two more seasons," Field Yates said. "Will that prevail? We'll see, but that has been the sentiment that scouts have been gathering when they spend time around the Texas program this past season."

With Manning potentially becoming the future No. 1 pick if he stays, the expectation is that he’ll be considered the best quarterback in college football. However, Joel Klatt believes that Clemson’s Cade Klubnik is the best quarterback at the college level, according to his recently released top 10 rankings.

This is sure to serve as added motivation for Manning, who is eager to make a significant impact this season. The redshirt sophomore will give Texas everything he has, with hopes of leading them to another deep playoff run.
