Texas analyst points out obvious issue with Longhorns head football coach Steve Sarkisian hunting for portal QB

Texas head football coach Steve Sarkisian has the most certain QB1 in the country ahead of the 2025 season: ex-No. 1 overall recruit, Arch Manning. But he also has one of the most uncertain depth charts behind Manning at the position of any program expected to contend for a CFP title this coming fall.

Lone Star Live’s Josh Newman believes that Sarkisian likely can’t solve that problem in the transfer portal considering what QBs in it are looking for relative to the role available in Austin.

“It would be a good idea for Sarkisian to at least kick the tires on some transfer portal options and see what comes back, but the problem with that is obvious,” Newman wrote.

“Sarkisian would not be looking for a starter, but rather depth. Quarterbacks in the transfer portal are looking for playing time. They want to start, not be backups.”

Newman tried to be optimistic about Trey Owens and KJ Lacey, but ultimately, it’s clear there’s a problem behind Manning that hasn’t existed the past two years with Quinn Ewers starting under center.

“Objectively, the room is light. If Manning were to miss time, especially early in the season, the options would be a true freshman with no experience, or a redshirt freshman with very limited experience,” Newman wrote.

Ewers declaring for the NFL draft offered a necessary solution to the uncomfortable question of what’d happen if he decided to return to Austin in 2025. At the same time, it created another uncomfortable question of whether or not Sarkisian has recruited enough depth in his absence.
