The legendary Madison Square Garden will host another massive boxing fight, as Teofimo Lopez defends the WBO and Ring super lightweight titles against Shakur Stevenson. The fight airs on DAZN.
Lopez (22-1) dethroned Vasiliy Lomachenko in 2020 to become the unified lightweight champion. Though he lost the belts against George Kambosos Jr., Lopez has since thrived at 140. “The Takeover” beat Josh Taylor for the WBO and Ring super lightweight belts.
The Brooklyn-born Lopez finally headlines the main theater of MSG. He aims to be explosive and prove that Stevenson, who has shown signs of aggression, will be flat on fight night.
"Success is all about entertainment," Lopez told ESPN. “We've seen it in the past when Shakur fought at Prudential Center in front of his hometown fans, and those people left his fights early because of his skill set.
“I think he has a lot of pressure on him to entertain, so maybe we're going to see something different out of him [against me]. But from what I've seen, he's not that exciting.”
Newark’s Stevenson (24-0) beat Edwin De Los Santos in 2023 for the WBC title. A multi-division champion, Stevenson shut doubters up when he engaged in a brawl against William Zepeda.
Stevenson is not letting the doubters or Lopez’s comments bother him as he heads into the biggest fight of his young career.
"I don't let that s--- bother me anymore," Stevenson told ESPN. "I just keep it moving and training hard. They haven't had any choice but to accept me. And after I win this fight, they ain't going to have no choice but to accept me and respect me."
Multiple titles are on the line on the Teofimo Lopez vs. Shakur Stevenson undercard, while several fighters look to impress.
