Streak Busters: Catholic Memorial's 17-game win streak in Massachusetts ends in loss to Xaverian Brothers

With roughly 14,000 11-man high school football teams competing across the country, there are always several dozen teams on lengthy double-digit win streaks.

And on any given weekend, several of those large streaks usually end. This weekend was no different as at least four teams on double-digit win streaks saw those long runs terminated.

The longest streak to end was the 17-game run by the Catholic Memorial [West Roxbury, MA] Knights who fell in a 25-22 loss to the Xaverian Brothers [Westwood, MA] Hawks. The Iona Prep [New Rochelle, NY] Gaels also saw their 16-game run end in a 28-21 loss to the Monsignor Farrell [Staten Island, NY] Lions.

Top two streaks to end both started on the same day

Catholic Memorial's run began on September 21, 2024, with a forfeit when the St. Francis [Hamburg, NY] Red Raiders were dealing with illness and canceled their game against the Knights. Memorial was 1-1 at that point after losing the season opener, 36-29, to the Cardinal Hayes [Bronx, NY] Cardinals before beating the Leominster [MA] Blue Devils, 56-28, to get the streak started in earnest with their first win on the field.

The Knights' streak continued for 12 games, culminating in a Massachusetts MIAA Division 2 state title in a 39-21 win over the King Philip Regional [Wrentham, MA] Warriors in the championship game. The streak continued for the first five games of this season before their loss Friday night to Xaverian Brothers.

Iona Prep's streak started the same day as Catholic Memorial's run in a 42-13 win at the Archbishop Stepinac [White Plains, NY] Crusaders. The Gaels were just 2-2 at that point, but ultimately went on to win the New York Catholic High School Football League Class AAA title in a 42-26 win over the Canisius [Buffalo, NY] Crusaders. The Gaels carried a 10-game win streak into 2025 winning their first six games before falling to Monsignor Farrell.

The only other teams on our list this are the Pinkerton [Derry, NH] Astros who saw their 13-game win streak end in a 27-20 loss to the Andover [MA] Golden Warriors and the Hillcrest [Idaho Fallas, ID] Knights whose 12-game run ended in a 35-22 loss to the Rigby [ID] Trojans.
