Stephon Castle and the San Antonio Spurs are gearing up for Game 1 of the NBA Finals against the New York Knicks. Castle played a major role in the Spurs’ run to the championship round, including the defensive showing in the Western Conference Finals where he helped slow down back-to-back MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander of the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Heading to the Knicks game, the Spurs have a big edge, and hear it from Castle's mouth.
“I just think our consistency and togetherness, it just screamed great habits throughout our locker room and with our leader being Victor Wembanyama,” Castle said. “With how good he is, with how young he is and for him to not have any ego, I think it just fed great energy throughout our locker room and especially early to start this year in January, we went on that long run where we won.
“I don't know how many games in a row, but I think just that kind of confidence and that kind of groove coming into the playoffs is what you want. I think we hit our stride at the right time and also we have the best player in the world on our team.”
Castle isn't wrong as many have labeled Wembanyama as the current best player in the NBA now is undeniable though he narrowly missed the MVP title. Wembanyama's season has already been historic, filled with record-setting performances. He is also closing in on a potential Spurs postseason milestone, as he would need 20 more blocks in the NBA Finals to break the franchise record for most blocks in a single playoff run, which is currently held by Tim Duncan.
Meanwhile, Castle has also been a standout and helped anchor the Spurs defensive unit that finished third in defensive rating during the regular season. He also held Jalen Brunson in check during their two regular-season meetings with the Knicks, including a dominant defensive showing where he limited Brunson to zero points on 0-of-4 shooting as his primary defender. It will definitely be a big thing heading to the Knicks game.
