Stephen A. Smith reveals surprising choice for Knicks head coaching vacancy

The New York Knicks made the shocking decision to part ways with Tom Thibodeau last week. Despite leading the franchise to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in a quarter century, the two-time NBA Coach of the Year was relieved of his duties after a five-year stint.

There has been plenty of speculation about who New York will bring in as they look to take the next step towards winning their first championship in over five decades. Stephen A. Smith recently revealed a surprising name that he believes should be in consideration for the job.

The long-time Knicks fan suggested that Mark Jackson should be considered for the role during the latest episode of "First Take".

"I'm going to always mention the name Mark Jackson because he's been away from the game for a decade as a coach," ESPN's Stephen A. Smith claimed Monday. "This man was responsible for building Golden State before Steve Kerr was brought in and took over and piggybacked off of that -- and ascended to four championships, no doubt. But Mark Jackson starred at Bishop Loughlin. Mark Jackson starred at St. John's University. Mark Jackson was a Rookie of the Year playing for the New York Knicks. Mark Jackson was a preeminent voice on the NBA and he knows and feels and vibes with New York -- he's a native."

Smith added that Jackson would serve as a voice from the franchise, while claiming that Knicks owner James Dolan and president Leon Rose hide from the fanbase. He noted that it is unlikely that New York hires the former Golden State Warriors coach, mentioning Jason Kidd and Mike Malone as other possibilities.

Jackson spent 17 seasons playing in the NBA, spending parts of seven seasons with the Knicks. His stint leading the Warriors lasted just three seasons, however, the organization improved tremendously during that span -- jumping from 23 wins in his first season to 51 wins in his final year.
