After months and months of questions, the Pittsburgh Steelers signed veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers to a one-year deal.
The Steelers waited and waited to see what Rodgers' decision was going to be, and now they know who will be the team's QB1 for the 2025 season.
However, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Steelers wanted Matthew Stafford in a trade, although nothing ever came really close.
Moreover, Schefter added that the Steelers wanted another QB instead of Rodgers: Justin Fields.
"This (Rodgers) was the third option for the Pittsburgh Steelers," Schefter said. "They were in on Matthew Stafford...They tried to re-sign Justin Fields. He opted to go to the New York Jets...After they couldn't get a trade done for Stafford and couldn't get Fields re-signed, they pivoted to Aaron Rodgers."
Schefter then called Rodgers the third-best QB in the AFC North behind Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow.
So, it turns out the Steelers made an attempt to re-sign Fields, although he has not been to a Pro Bowl and has had an up-and-down career in the league thus far. But, Fields is a younger option and one who could've solidified the QB position in Pittsburgh.
With Rodgers, it is likely a one-year plan, which means in 2026 they will once again be back to the QB drawing board.
But, the Steelers are just thinking about this season and making a playoff run as they will figure out the rest later on.
