The Pittsburgh Steelers are back and ready to rock hard for another season. There's lots of buzz around quarterback Aaron Rodgers ending his historic NFL career this season in Pittsburgh. He's back with his coach, too, Mike McCarthy, from his glory Green Bay Packers days.
So, there's a lot to be excited about right now for the Terrible Towel crew. What could make things even better is if this team has some real stars around Rodgers to help him perform to his very best.
As it turns out, the Steelers may have a budding running back on their hands.
Rico Dowdle could be a key piece for the Steelers
On Friday, Ben Solak of ESPN unleashed a feature with the X-factor for each NFL team going into the new season. For the Steelers, it's running back Rico Dowdle.
"It's hard to imagine a Steelers offense that is playoff-caliber without an elite running game, given 42-year-old Aaron Rodgers' limited style of play in the passing attack," he notes in this piece. "And it's hard to imagine an elite Steelers running game without a big year from Dowdle, who slots in alongside Jaylen Warren to form one of the most interesting one-two punch backfields in the league."
"If Dowdle fills his role well behind this Steelers offensive line, which could be the best he has played behind, Pittsburgh has an avenue to defensive victories thanks to a reliable rushing attack that controls the clock and stays ahead of the sticks," he adds.
The Steelers absolutely need to have young, energetic players to complement Rodgers, who's still energetic but certainly getting up there for a quarterback in the NFL. Dowdle can help if he plays right.
