Canada’s central statistics agency changed the date it plans to publish a major inflation print after economists warned against releasing the data while the country’s financial markets are closed for a holiday next month.

Statistics Canada said it will next update the consumer price index on Feb. 17. Previously, the agency had planned to release the data a day earlier, when eight of the country’s 10 provinces have a statutory holiday and equity and bond markets are closed.

“Statistics Canada’s goal is to balance timeliness in disseminating our data with the needs of data users,” Julien Abord-Babin, a spokesperson for the agency, said in an email.

“Data users benefit from having access to these figures at a time when they can be optimally used for decision-making. In response to these exceptional circumstances, and after consultation with key stakeholders, the agency has decided to reschedule the release date,” Abord-Babin said.

Economists had warned that releasing the data on the holiday could distort trading and give foreign investors an edge.
