The St. Louis Cardinals keeping Oli Marmol to me doesn’t make much sense. Signing him to a two-year extension made even less sense to me.
However, it isn’t all of his fault that the Cardinals have struggled recently, and even if fans want him gone, there has to be something said about that.
When and if the time comes, there seems to be an obvious replacement, and Jake Elman of FanSided named him after writing about Yadier Molina as a potential future option. Molina is a legend in St. Louis and did a good job of coaching in the WBC.
For a franchise built on tradition and continuity, Molina’s connection to St. Louis makes the idea a possible one.
“Sometimes, the fit is simply obvious: Molina remains a beloved figure among Cardinals fans with managerial experience. Besides, it’s not like players-turned-managers don’t succeed if they join their former teams.
“The Dodgers brought Dave Roberts back, and he’s won three titles over his 10 years as manager. Boone isn’t perfect, though he’s regularly made the postseason with the Yankees. Mark Kotsay has kept the Athletics afloat and competent amid a disastrous few years. What’s stopping Molina from being next up to thrive?” Elman wrote.
That track record of former players succeeding in skipper roles strengthens his case. However, just as there are examples of that, there are many examples of it not working out.
The one thing that hurts here is that if Molina were to struggle as a skipper, it could hurt his legacy in St. Louis a bit.
