Spurs trade for Kevin Durant ‘is done already’ according to Bill Simmons

The San Antonio Spurs could be looking to add another gigantic superstar next to Victor Wembanyama.

Much of the offseason speculation has centered around an uber-expensive trade for Bucks legend Giannis Antetokounmpo.

But NBA analyst Bill Simmons thinks something else is in play. Simmons said on his podcast that the Spurs are going after Kevin Durant, and he thinks a deal might already be done.

“I wouldn't be surprised if KD to the Spurs is done already and they just haven't announced it,” Simmons said. “Basically, they've agreed on specifics, just announce it on the week of the draft. This goes back to the Giannis thing. I think they trade for KD because it just costs less. They'll be able to be real competitive and maybe go a couple of rounds in the playoffs, but they're also going to keep the No. 2 pick and do it that way, which is my prediction.”

That No. 2 pick is definitely a key point here. The Spurs lucked into that spot in the lottery, which could be used to draft a point guard like Dylan Harper (Rutgers) or V.J. Edgecombe (Baylor) or a lanky scorer like Ace Bailey (Rutgers).

Keeping the No. 2 pick gives the Spurs two competitive windows. They'd have this newly opened window that includes Durant and Wembanyama, and when Durant chose to move on, they'd still have Wemby, Stephon Castle and whoever the new young star is.

The Suns will probably want a couple future first-rounders for Durant, but if the Spurs quickly become a playoff team, then those picks won't be intensely valuable.

San Antonio also needs Wembanyama to return to full health after his blood clot issues, but if that happens, teaming him with Durant sounds awesome.
