Spurs predicted to trade De'Aaron Fox for $457M scary veteran trio to pair with Victor Wembenyama

The San Antonio Spurs are coming off an NBA Finals appearance that did not end the way they wanted it to. The Spurs were defeated in five games by the New York Knicks in a series where they actually led for most of the time.

It was clear in the series that De’Aaron Fox was not playing effectively. In fact, Dylan Harper had better numbers than him.

“The Spurs are outscoring the Knicks by 15.3 points per 100 possessions when Dylan Harper shares the court with Victor Wembanyama. Needing to win three of the next four to force a Game 7 in the NBA Finals, it’s time to bench De’Aaron Fox in favor of Wembanyama’s long-term option,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.

Many have called for Stephon Castle and Harper to become the next starting backcourt for San Antonio. Even Charles Barkley has compared the duo to Steph Curry and Klay Thompson.

“If I’m a guard in the NBA, I do not want to see them boys the next 10 years. They’re going to be the new Steph and Klay,” Barkley said.

If the Spurs do decide to go somewhat in the direction of the young backcourt, they could trade Fox. Heavy.com’s Sai Mohan has a trade proposal that sends Fox, Luke Kornet, Keldon Johnson, Carter Bryant and picks to the Dallas Mavericks for Kyrie Irving, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford and Caleb Martin.

“Spurs would receive: Kyrie Irving, PJ Washington, Daniel Gafford, Caleb Martin. Mavericks would receive: De’Aaron Fox, Keldon Johnson, Luke Kornet (via NTMLE), Carter Bryant (via TPE), 2027 1st-round pick (via ATL), 2028 1st-round pick (via SAS), 2027 2nd-round pick (via SAS), 2028 2nd-round pick (via NOP),” Mohan wrote.

This would be an absolute blockbuster, and for the Spurs, they would become significantly better than they were last year. Irving, Gafford and Washington would give them insane versatility.

Gafford, Washington and Irving have made $457 million combined in their careers. Bringing in Irving would give them a true point guard to help teach Castle and Harper. Gafford and Washington alongside Victor Wembanyama would give San Antonio the size that no team wants to match up with.
