The San Antonio Spurs should be motivated to address their biggest areas of need/weaknesses this summer after falling to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.
The Spurs could certainly shore up their Victor Wembanyama-led frontcourt, as they don’t possess the depth needed to give them a balanced attack going forward.
NBA insider Scoop B. Robinson can envision a former Chicago Bulls All-Rookie guard on San Antonio’s 2026-27 roster, but believes the organization would have to sacrifice its 20-year-old rising star to make it happen.
“The modern NBA landscape is driven by two things: real estate on the hardwood and the timeline of your core,” Robinson wrote Sunday. “I’ve got a captivating trade blueprint that could fundamentally shake up the foundations of both the Utah Jazz and the San Antonio Spurs.
“With both organizations navigating unique locker room dynamics and looking to maximize elite young pieces, this multi-player swap serves as a direct answer to existing roster logjams. However, it also demands an intense, high-stakes gamble from both front offices.”
“Let’s look at how this conceptual framework moves the needle on the court (Dylan Harper, Keldon Johnson, and Luke Kornet to the Jazz for Lauri Markkanen, Kyle Filipowski, Svi Mykhailiuk, and two future Utah first-round picks.”
Based on the way Harper performed in the hardwood this past postseason, it’s safe to assume that most die-hard Spurs supporters wouldn’t approve this blockbuster offseason trade.
The Rutgers product displayed a level of maturity that’s rarely seen in first-year contributors in the playoffs, making all the right reads off the dribble in half-court scenarios and understanding the importance of using his end-to-end speed to put defenders in a bind.
Harper contributed 14.1 points. 5.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, shooting 51.5% from the field and 33.3% from three in 23 postseason contests.
That said, pairing Wembanyama with Markkanen in San Antonio could be a match made in heaven, as both contributors are adequate floor spacers who can put the ball on the floor 30+ feet from the basket and wreak havoc in the low post.
Markkanen enjoyed a career year with the Jazz in 2025-26, averaging 26.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while connecting on 47.7% of his field goals and 35.5% of his triples.
If the Spurs decide to go all-in on a dynamic power forward this summer, Harper could find himself on the trade block sooner than expected.
