The San Antonio Spurs, as expected, dominated the Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves, and LeBron James-less Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night.
Victor Wembanyama led the way for the Spurs offensively, recording 40 points, 12 rebounds, two steals, and one block in San Antonio’s 136-108 win vs. the Lakers.
Shortly after the Spurs’ dominant win, the franchise made an interesting roster move. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Spurs cut ties with Wembanyama’s 6-foot-8 All-Rookie teammate.
“The San Antonio Spurs and forward Jeremy Sochan have agreed on his release to allow the 2023 All-Rookie team member to become a free agent,” Charania reported Wednesday. “Sochan is expected to decide among multiple interested teams.”
Sochan’s tenure with the Spurs got off to a promising start. The Baylor product contributed 11.0 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game, earning him All-Rookie second team honors.
While Sochan’s next two seasons were equally as impressive, there was one area of his game that remained concerning: three-point shooting. The springy 22-year-old shot below 31% from beyond the arc, and unfortunately, that trend continued in Year 4.
Sochan, who averaged 4.1 points on 47.5% field goal shooting and 25.7% three-point shooting with the Spurs this season, found himself out of the Spurs’ regular rotation.
Considering the Guymon, Oklahoma native is still a high-upside forward who’s already oozed potential in the big leagues, it wouldn’t be surprising to witness a contending Eastern or Western Conference contender take a chance on him.
