Trades between two Western Conference teams with bright futures are never exactly the smartest thing to do, but it's also fair to note that some teams aren't contenders just yet.
One of those squads is the Dallas Mavericks, who have a chance of being an elite team sooner rather than later with Cooper Flagg. The only question for Dallas is whether it thinks it can be elite this season. I don't think so, but only time will tell.
That seems to be the consensus in the NBA, which is why one writer recently suggested moving on from P.J. Washington.
If that proves to be the case, the San Antonio Spurs have an absolutely perfect player to pursue.
“The Mavericks are wisely resisting the urge to recklessly burn future flexibility, content to methodically collect long-term draft equity rather than rushing their contention window. Because high-IQ, hyper-switchable hybrid forwards are the most coveted currency in modern basketball, P.J. Washington is the perfect trade bait to trigger a bidding war among win-now contenders,” Joe Cervenka wrote.
Washington is very athletic, can hit open shots from three-point range, and can defend multiple positions. Frankly, for contending teams like San Antonio that can already defend at a high level, there really aren't many better options.
I suspect that his price could be a tad high, but that's the only thing the Spurs would have to consider here.
