Sparks' Kelsey Plum, Kate Martin show off special on-court connection

Kate Martin is likely never going to be more than a role player in the WNBA.

But the best role players understand that to fit in on a given roster, they've got to help amplify what the stars can do. Martin showed she could do that at Iowa with Caitlin Clark, and now she's alongside Kelsey Plum with the Los Angeles Sparks.

It's Martin's third team in three years in the league, but she looks right at home with Plum. The best role players have that chameleon-like quality about them to just fit right in.

One clip captured fans' attention during Sunday's Sparks win over the Portland Fire. Martin made sure to get the ball quickly back to Plum, watched as the lefty beat her defender, then was waiting ready in the corner for a pass to knock down a 3-pointer.

Martin scored five points in eight minutes, not a night to write home about but the kind of outings she has to keep having to keep earning playing time.

Plum had a pretty casual 16 points and seven assists.

Nneka Ogwumike stole the show for the Sparks with 20 points and 17 rebounds in a 17-point rout of the expansion Fire.

But it's good to see Martin fitting in, because she was let go on the eve of the season by the Golden State Valkyries, and it would've been easy for her to not latch on with any team right away.

The Sparks proved they wanted her, and Martin has proven she deserves minutes.
