Sophie Cunningham sends heartfelt message to Fever rookie amid reduced role

Raven Johnson has not enjoyed the same opportunities with the Indiana Fever in recent weeks, but the rookie guard continues to receive overwhelming support from her teammates. Johnson shared a series of photos on Instagram on Sunday, offering followers a glimpse at several of her pregame outfits and other moments away from the court.

“A lil bit of me,” Johnson captioned the post.

Several Fever players quickly filled the comment section with praise. Lexie Hull wrote, “Ooooolala,” while Monique Billings declared, “10s all across the board.” Bree Hall and Grace VanSlooten also showed Johnson some love. Sophie Cunningham delivered perhaps the most meaningful response.

“You’re just the best,” Cunningham wrote. “I love you.”

The brief message offered another example of the bond Cunningham has developed with her teammates. It also arrived during a challenging stretch for Johnson, whose place in Indiana’s rotation has diminished considerably.

Raven Johnson remains ready for her next Fever opportunity

Johnson averaged 14.7 minutes over her first 22 games with Indiana, recording 4.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.8 assists per contest. Her role has changed as the season has progressed, however. The rookie averaged only 3.3 minutes across the Fever’s past seven games, contributing 1.6 points per appearance.

That reduction could be difficult for any young player, especially one attempting to establish herself during her first professional season. Johnson nevertheless appears to be handling the situation with maturity. Fever coach Stephanie White previously praised Johnson for remaining professional despite her limited opportunities. With Indiana attempting to secure a top-four playoff seed, White has relied more heavily on her experienced players and tightened the rotation.

That does not necessarily mean Johnson will remain on the outside indefinitely. Injuries, foul trouble and unfavorable matchups can quickly force a coach to reconsider a rotation. Johnson’s responsibility is to remain prepared, and every indication suggests she has done exactly that.

Sophie Cunningham continues to strengthen Fever chemistry

Cunningham’s public support may appear to be a small gesture, but those messages can carry additional weight during a difficult portion of a rookie season.

The veteran guard understands the unpredictable nature of playing time in the WNBA. Cunningham has experienced changing roles throughout her career and knows how quickly a player can move into or out of a rotation.

Her message also reflects the chemistry Indiana has worked to build. The Fever have faced adversity throughout the season, but the players have repeatedly made it clear that they remain invested in one another.

Johnson’s teammates did not need to discuss her reduced role beneath the post. Their comments served as a reminder that her value inside the locker room extends beyond her place in the box score.

The rookie’s next chance could arrive at any moment. Until then, Johnson appears committed to staying ready and maintaining a positive outlook.

Cunningham and the rest of the Fever will be there to support her along the way.
