This offseason has been a major one around the NBA, with teams across the league trying to build rosters capable of contending for an NBA championship. There have already been blockbuster moves, including Jaylen Brown and Giannis Antetokounmpo leaving their respective organizations.
The biggest free agent of the summer was LeBron James, who is entering his 24th NBA season. The four-time NBA champion ultimately signed with the Philadelphia 76ers.
“LeBron James is signing with the Philadelphia 76ers for his final run at another NBA championship, he announced Friday," ESPN's Dave McMenamin wrote. "James, 41, is signing a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, Klutch Sports Group CEO Rich Paul told ESPN's Shams Charania."
With James heading to Philadelphia, he left his son, Bronny James, with the Los Angeles Lakers. The father and son are set to face each other for the first time on Christmas Day, potentially making NBA history once again.
“Really curious how fans are going to react to LeBron’s return. A lot of the season will have taken place by Christmas and I feel like both teams’ records are going to play a role. Also, kind of nice LeBron and Bronny get to be together for Christmas,” Lakers insider Anthony F. Irwin wrote.
It would be the first time in NBA history that a father and son play against each other in the same game. Of course, both players will have to be healthy when the two teams meet for the historic matchup. It would also mark the second time LeBron and Bronny have accomplished a historic feat together.
“When LeBron James made history two seasons ago, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the NBA's all-time leading scorer, his eldest son, Bronny, was sitting courtside along the baseline. On Tuesday night, in the Los Angeles Lakers' season opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves, LeBron and Bronny made history by being on the court together,” McMenamin wrote.
The two spent significant time together during their two seasons in Los Angeles. Now, they will continue their careers with separate organizations. Bronny is looking to take another step forward, while LeBron is chasing his fifth NBA championship.
Christmas Day could be a memorable one for the James family. LeBron will return to Los Angeles to spend the holiday with his family before potentially making history with his son later that day. It could be another historic night for LeBron and Bronny.
