The first regular season Indiana Fever game is being held on Saturday, May 17, against the Chicago Sky. The players, including new addition Sophie Cunningham, arrived at Gainbridge Fieldhouse dressed to impress.
Cunningham sported an all black lacy ensemble with a suit coat over the top and high heels. The Indiana Fever shared her game day outfit along with her teammates on their Instagram page.
Cunningham, who is from the Phoenix Mercury, was traded to the Fever back in February. Unfortunately, however, the 28-year-old is not expected to play in Saturday’s game due to an ankle injury.
Cunningham twisted her ankle during a preseason game against the Atlanta Dream back on Saturday, May 10.
While she was, of course, hopeful to be recovered enough to play in Saturday’s game, Fever coach Stephanie White emphasized that it’s important not to rush the healing process.
“Sometimes you have to save players from themselves, right? Like, help them understand the big picture,” White said. “It's not an advantage for us if she plays, but then she blows up and has swelling or tweaks and then is out for another 2-3 weeks. So we'll rely on the medical staff to really evaluate where she is, and if it's safe for her to go out there. If we feel like it's safe, she's gonna play. If they feel like she needs a little bit more time, then we'll wait.”
