‘Slugger of the Year’: Schwarber puts up MVP-level numbers

1 hour ago 3

Kyle Schwarber has dominated opposing pitchers in 2025, earning himself consideration for the National League MVP award alongside two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani.

In 156 games, Schwarber leads the NL in home runs (53) and RBIs (129). He has also hit 22 doubles and holds a .241 batting average — an improvement on his career mark of .231. To go with those numbers, he has compiled 4.4 WAR and tied a career high with 10 stolen bases. Schwarber has also shown strong plate discipline, drawing 105 walks, the third most in the National League.

ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan declared Schwarber the “Slugger of the Year” with the season coming to a close. From long home runs to four-homer games to his swing-off blast in the MLB All-Star Game, Schwarber has done it all in 2025.

Without star right-hander Zack Wheeler, the Philadelphia Phillies will lean heavily on Schwarber’s production once the postseason begins. The former World Series champion has plenty of October experience, making the playoffs nine times in his career, not counting this season.

In 69 career postseason games, Schwarber is batting .237 with 21 home runs and 34 RBIs. While those numbers are impressive, it’s safe to say he has never entered October playing at this level. Once a complementary piece of the Chicago Cubs’ World Series run in 2016, Schwarber now has the chance to lead Philadelphia to its first championship since 2008.

Although not completely out of the race for the NL’s No. 1 playoff seed, the Phillies trail the Milwaukee Brewers by three games with six remaining. Even if they fail to catch Milwaukee, Philadelphia will still enjoy a first-round bye before beginning Division Series play.
