Simon Harmer dismissed Axar Patel on Day 2 of the first Test between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Saturday, November 15. The off-spinner continued to spin a web for the Indian batters, dismissing Axar for 16 as India fell flat for 189 in their first innings.

The last wicket fell in the 63rd over of India’s innings. Harmer outsmarted Axar by following him with a short delivery outside off. The left-hander tried to create some room, but the extra bounce did the trick. The batter failed to keep the ball down and ended up handing an easy catch to Marco Jasen at backward point. The ball induced a top edge and ballooned towards the fielder.

South Africa fight back as Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen stop India for 189 in 1st innings

A clinical bowling display from Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen helped South Africa bounce back against India in the first Test. Harmer bagged a four-wicket haul, while Jansen bagged three. As a result, the hosts were bundled out for 189 in 62.2 overs, managing only a 30-run first innings lead. KL Rahul top-scored with 39, while Washington Sundar, Rishabh Pant, and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with their 20s. Skipper Shubman Gill (four off three balls) didn’t come out to bat for the second time after getting retired hurt due to a back spasm.

Earlier on Day 1, Jasprit Bumrah helped India bowl South Africa out for 159 in their first innings. The speedster bagged his record 16th fifer in Test cricket. Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each.

India haven’t lost a Test to South Africa since 2010. They won the previous two Test series against the Proteas at home by identical 3-0 margins. With the game hanging in the balance, reigning World Test Champions, South Africa, will be looking to put their best foot forward.
