Lauren Chan wrapped her Sports Illustrated Swimsuit cover moment with a look that was as bold as it was personal. The first out lesbian to grace the cover of the Swimsuit edition turned heads in a curve-sculpting, see-through Jean Paul Gaultier/Shayne Oliver gown that quickly went viral after she posted a behind-the-scenes reel to Instagram on Wednesday, May 21.
“For my last SI Swimsuit look I wanted something that commented on the idea of the perfect body,” she wrote. “And when I saw this gown with padding, I immediately knew it was the one.”
Chan, 34, explained that early in her career, she was expected to wear artificial enhancements to fit the industry’s idea of “plus-size perfection”—a practice that shaped her sense of body image for years.
“I was okay with it because it helped me make money, but it chronically reinforced that my body is not up to the beauty standard, nor the plus-size ideal that very much exists,” Chan said. “I guess I didn’t realize how long—and how deeply—I’ve carried that idea with me.”
The moment resonated deeply with her audience. Fans and fellow models filled the comments with praise, calling her a “cover queen,” an “inspiration,” and someone who “moves mountains” by showing up exactly as she is.
