Michigan’s narrow three-point victory over Nebraska in Week 4 marked its first Big Ten win of the season and kept postseason hopes alive. While it was not a flawless performance, it showed the kind of resolve that often defines playoff teams.

The return of head coach Sherrone Moore now gives the Wolverines added stability as they enter a crucial stretch. FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt believes that even with one loss already on the record, the path to the College Football Playoff remains open if Michigan can manage a 10–2 finish.

Klatt outlines Michigan’s playoff path after gritty Nebraska win

Breaking down the schedule on his show, Klatt pointed to the upcoming road games at USC on Oct. 11 and Washington on Oct. 18, followed by Michigan State and the season finale against Ohio State.

“They’ve lost one game already, so the question is: can they go 3–1 in that stretch? If they do, that gets them to 10–2, and at 10–2 I think Michigan is probably in the College Football Playoff, depending on what happens with other top teams,” Klatt said.

Michigan’s lone setback came against Oklahoma, a loss that looked damaging at first but now appears stronger as the Sooners climb national rankings. That result could end up being seen as a quality defeat rather than a blemish.

The bye week arrives before a home matchup with Wisconsin on Oct. 4. With Bryce Underwood settling into his role as a poised and productive freshman quarterback, Moore back on the sideline, and momentum building, Michigan enters October knowing Klatt’s scenario is within reach.

For the Wolverines, the task is straightforward: stack conference wins and keep their playoff case alive heading toward November.
