The South Carolina Gamecocks football program suffered a terrible 41-34 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday. The Bulldogs rallied from a 16-0 deficit for the victory. South Carolina's first loss of the year, came at the worst time for head coach Shane Beamer.

After missing a bowl game in the 2025 season, losing 31-30 at No. 3 Texas A&M on Nov. 15, there was no room for error this year. This felt like last year all over again. The Gamecocks led 30-3 at halftime but did not score in the second half against the Aggies in 2025.

South Carolina (2-1, 0-1 SEC) is at a crossroads with Beamer, who is in his sixth season as the Gamecocks coach. According to ESPN, Beamer would owe South Carolina $5 million in "liquidated damages" if he terminates his new contract on or before Dec. 31, 2026. Every year, the figure drops.

$4 million before Dec. 31, 2027

$3 million before Dec. 31, 2028

$2 million before Dec. 31, 2029

$1 million before Dec. 31, 2030

Beamer's new contract pays him $8.25 million in 2026, and increases by $100,000 annually, reaching $8.65 million by 2030.

If he was fired from South Carolina before the conclusion of 2026, he would be owed $27.9 million. The figure drops to $22.1 million after Dec. 31, 2026.

Beamer can earn up to $1.7 million in bonuses per year. The specifics weren't provided by South Carolina.

Here's what Beamer said upon signing his new deal.

"I'm proud to represent the University of South Carolina and to lead our football program as the head coach," Beamer said in a statement. "As I've said before, this is my dream job. My family and I love being here. We've accomplished a lot on and off the field over the past four years, but we're not satisfied. There's more to do and we're just getting started."

The new deal makes Beamer the SEC's ninth-highest paid coach, along with Oklahoma's Brent Venables, according to contract figures from USA TODAY Sports. Georgia's Kirby Smart is the highest-paid coach in the league, with an annual salary of about $13.3 million.
