Sam Leavitt vs. Trinidad Chambliss draft stock: Ole Miss QB makes statement by outperforming LSU counterpart

Trinidad Chambliss and Sam Leavitt headlined the heated battle between Ole Miss and LSU, but it was Chambliss who shined with a stellar performance. 

The Rebels quarterback returned to Oxford instead of entering the NFL draft, and that decision has payed off early as he has put up impressive numbers. Chambliss now had a win over former coach Lane Kiffin and LSU on his resume as he plays his final collegiate season.

Leavitt, on the other hand, transferred from Arizona State to LSU in search of developing under Kiffin, but he hasn't gotten off to the best of starts. Leavitt has shown turnover issues and hasn't been consistent in the passing game, which will need to improve over the course of the season.

Both of these players are among several quarterbacks in play for the 2027 NFL draft, which is highly-anticipated for its depth. Here's where their stock's are early in the year.

Chambliss has impressed with his numbers to start the season, as many believe that he is the best quarterback in college football. The sixth-year player has a strong arm and is very mobile, and he has shown maturity and growth in reading defenses.

Had Chambliss entered the 2026 draft, he would've probably been considered a day-two player coming off his College Football Playoff appearance. Yahoo's Nate Tice had Chambliss just inside his top 30 entering the season, while ESPN's Jordan Reid didn't have him in his first-round mock draft before the season began.

Of course, Chambliss has time to rise up the ranks. The Ringer's Todd McShay, for instance, has Chambliss ranked No. 13 on his big board thus far.

Leavitt is a polarizing quarterback prospect, as some analysts like him more than others. The quarterback is a dual-threat player who knows how to use his legs but still has to develop with his passing abilities.

After a breakout season at Arizona State in 2024, Leavitt dealt with injuries in 2025 that stunted his growth. now that he transferred to LSU, Leavitt has a chance to develop more under Lane Kiffin's tutelage. 

McShay is one of the highest analysts on Leavitt, as he ranks the LSU quarterback at No. 20 overall on his current big board. Additionally, ESPN's Pete Thamel reported that one NFL executive had Leavitt as their top quarterback in the 2027 class.

Leavitt does have eligibility remaining, so he doesn't have to leave if he wants to return to college in 2027.

Chambliss will have to battle two typical red flags in the draft process after the season. First, the Ole Miss quarterback is an older prospect who will be 25 years-old when Week 1 of the 2027 NFL season takes place. Chambliss was born the same year as Drake Maye and Cam Ward, and he is a year younger than Jaxson Dart and Fernando Mendoza.

Second Chambliss is short for a quarterback, as he is listed at six-feet tall but could measure under that at the NFL combine. While there have been shorter starting quarterbacks recently, like Kyler Murray, Russell Wilson and Baker Mayfield, most quarterbacks in the league are still taller than 6-feet.

Leavitt, meanwhile is a little taller but a little slighter than Chambliss, which is notable since he often uses his legs to make plays. Additionally, Leavitt is 2.5 years younger than Chambliss and, assuming he enters the 2027 draft, will be the standard draft age of 22.

Chambliss spent a four years at Ferris State, redshirting in 2021 and not appearing in a game in 2022. He first got into action in 2023, but then took over as the starter in 2024, when he broke out with 51 total touchdowns. Chambliss then transferred to Ole Miss, and he has continued his success in Oxford.

Sam Leavitt

Leavitt started his collegiate career at Michigan State, but transferred to Arizona State to take over as the starting quarterback. He had a solid two years for the Sun Devils, although his 2025 was marred by injuries, and then transferred to Baton Rouge in the offseason.
