A major wrestling personality has been bad-mouthing AEW President Tony Khan after he introduced a new title on Dynamite tonight. On the show, the Jacksonville-based promotion announced the addition of the AEW National Championship, similar to the NWA National Championship. NWA promoter Bryan Idol has been criticizing Khan following the announcement.
Bryan reasoned his criticism of the All Elite President. Idol said that Khan has introduced a title similar to NWA's to downplay the latter promotion. A few months ago, the Jacksonville-based promotion wanted to trademark the term 'Shockwave.' However, NWA contested it, since they had already used it before, and therefore, Tony Khan couldn't reserve the name.
While speaking to Ringside News, Bryan Idol said that introducing the 'national championship' is Tony Khan retaliating after losing the trademark war.
“The use of the word ‘Shockwave’ in programming as a name of a program was originally owned rights by N.W.A. That’s why it never came out for AEW when they announced that it would—because they got hit with a lawsuit. This is retaliation for AEW already currently losing a lawsuit to NWA over the use of intellectual property, so now they are trying to stir the pot by having Tony Khan’s Richie Rich announce this tonight," he said.[H/T - Ringside News]Inaugural AEW National Champion will be crowned at Full Gear
Things moved fast on Dynamite after Tony Khan announced the new championship. It was declared that the first champion would be crowned at Full Gear in a Casino Gauntlet Match. Many stars immediately entered the contests following the announcement.
The Hurt Syndicate's Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin were the first two competitors proclaimed for the match. Moments later, their arch-nemesis, Ricochet, also inserted himself into the high-stakes contest. It will be interesting to see who else will be part of the match.
Also, Tony Khan has yet to respond to the allegations made by Bryan Idol. It remains to be seen what else the NWA promoter will have to say about the new championship.
