The Ottawa Senators made a key trade deadline decision to acquire Fabian Zetterlund from the San Jose Sharks.

The Sens have followed that up by giving Zetterlund a solid contract extension.

NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that Zetterlund will be signing a three-year deal at an average of $4.275  million for a total value of nearly $13 million.

Zetterlund's 2023-24 season led to a career-high in points with 44, and he finished this past season with 41 points to go with his physical play style.

He was part of a push by the Senators in the second half of this season that resulted in an ending of their long playoff drought.

Now, the Senators are trying to keep their key pieces around so they can build on their big season.

Zetterlund will turn 26 years old in August, so this contract allows the Senators to lock up the prime years of his career.

The 5-foot-11, 220-pound forward set a new career-high for himself this past season with 154 hits, and he also had his best shot blocking season with 81 blocks.

He's just the kind of grinder with some offensive skill that can help round out a playoff team, and that's exactly what the Senators want to be consistently once again.
