MLB insider predicts Marlins will trade $56 million former Cy Young

The Miami Marlins are out of contention in both the National League East and Wild Card races. At 29-43, it's already time for them to think about being sellers at the trade deadline this summer.

Right-hander Sandy Alcantara was expected to be traded early in the season, though he has struggled in his return from Tommy John surgery that kept him out for all of 2024.

However, he has strung together three solid starts in a row, so a trade isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Matt Snyder of CBS Sports believes that Alcantara will still be traded.

"The easy answer is Sandy Alcantara and now that he's strung together three straight decent-to-good starts, we can begin to think about him being dealt again," Snyder wrote.

The Marlins are out of contention, so it does make sense for them to trade Alcantara. His struggles complicate things, but he has two years of club control plus a club option for 2027.

That alone makes him an attractive trade piece.

The 29-year-old former Cy Young winner is 3-8 with a 6.88 ERA in 14 starts with the Marlins this year. He hasn't quite found his form in his return from Tommy John surgery.

However, he still is capable of being one of the top starters in Major League Baseball, so it isn't like there's no value attached to him.

It will be interesting to see if he can rebuild his trade stock before the deadline.
