Two of the biggest questions during every college football season are simple: who is the nation's best quarterback, and who will win the Heisman Trophy? Preseason hype often fades by the finish, but for SEC Network analyst Jordan Rodgers, the answers are already clear: LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier.
Nussmeier may have started the season slower than expected, but Rodgers believes the junior is still primed for stardom.
On "SEC Nation" on Saturday, Rodgers said:
“You know what I love about rivalries? Is that there's always a superstar that's waiting to break out. And right now, that's Garrett Nussmeier,” Rodgers said. “Because he's had a little bit of a slow start to the season, but he is the best quarterback in college football. I still believe he'll be holding the Heisman Trophy when it's all said and done.”
Rodgers credited Nussmeier's ability to excel under duress, citing LSU's Week 1 win over Clemson as proof of his upside.
“He's so good off-platform. He's so good when pressure's on. You saw him rise to the biggest occasions against Clemson in Week 1, the No. 4 team in the country,” Rodgers said.
This season, Nussmeier has completed 54 of 79 passes (68.4%) for 469 yards with two touchdowns and one interception over two games.
Rodgers also acknowledged the slow start: “He’s had kind of a B performance to start this season. These are the games, the rivalry games, where the stars are stars. They start their Heisman campaigns, and they break out. And I think that’s what’s going to happen.”
On Saturday, Nussmeier and No. 3 LSU (2-0) face the Florida Gators (1-1) at 7:30 p.m. ET. With signs of struggles emerging under Billy Napier, the LSU quarterback will likely look to exploit Florida's weaknesses and light up the scoreboard.
