Multiple NFL teams were hit with the injury bug during Week 2, and unfortunately, the Seahawks got in on it early with quarterback Sam Darnold going down in Week 1. Darnold was injured during the team's season opener against the New England Patriots on Sept. 9 and hasn't returned yet.
But, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald is starting to ease him into the routine. On Wednesday, Macdonald shared an update about Darnold's recovery timeline.
A final Sam Darnold decision is expected to come by the weekend
Earlier in the week, Macdonald indicated that he wanted Darnold back on the field for practice this week, and that's still the plan. The coach told reporters on Wednesday that Darnold will take the field as he recovers from his glute injury.
Of course, Darnold won't be 100%. Macdonald said the quarterback won't go full force, but he does hope he'll be able to take on more responsibility as the week goes by.
"He's not going to take every rep today and then we'll kind of ramp it up as the week goes," Macdonald said at a Wednesday press conference.
There's still no official word on if he'll play against the Washington Commanders in Week 3. Macdonald said the decision would revolve around "does he feel good enough to play." He did indicate that a decision is coming soon, though, and said they'd like to know whether it will be Darnold or Drew Lock on the field by the time they head into the weekend.
It's not a situation any NFL team wants to be in, especially at the start of the season. But at least Darnold is making a recovery and won't be out for the entire run.
