When the Seattle Seahawks pulled off the trade for their new middle linebacker Ernest Jones IV a few weeks ago, we initially gave the deal an A grade, but with an asterisk. That was meant as a bookmark to come back to later, because if the Seahawks don't wind up signing Jones to a long-term contract extension then the deal is not nearly as good.
To recap, Seattle sent a fourth-round draft pick plus linebacker Jerome Baker to the Tennessee Titans for Jones, who had just been traded to Tennessee from the Los Angeles Rams two months prior - a move head coach Sean McVay seemed perturbed about at the time.
Anything that makes McVay mad is a good thing as far as the Seahawks are concerned, and Jones should prove to be a capable centerpiece for Mike Macdonald's defense in the future. Speaking of the future, it sounds like Jones is expecting to stay in the Seattle area for a while.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday at the VMAC, Jones said that he spent the bye week moving his family from the hotel they were staying at into a house, according to Gregg Bell at the Tacoma News Tribune.
Jones' contract will be up at the end of the season, but you don't buy a house if you're not planning to stay for more than a few weeks. That indicates Jones at least expects to hammer out a long-term contract with the Seahawks. Most likely the front office will see how the rest of this season goes before they make that move, but it should be near the top of their priorities list once the offseason begins.
