Have you, like us, long wished to add Grave of the Fireflies to your home video collection, but have been stymied by the exorbitant cost that the Blu-rays and DVDs have historically carried online? Well, prepare to finally purchase the heart-rending animated classic thanks to a new re-release! And if you’re visiting San Diego Comic-Con this weekend, you can pick up your copy in person at the Shout! Studios booth (#4118).
Grave of the Fireflies
Originally released in 1988, Grave of the Fireflies is written and directed by Isao Takahata. Based on the short story by Akiyuki Nosaka, the tragic animated film is set during World War II and follows siblings Seita and Setsuko. Originally, Grave of the Fireflies was released as a double feature alongside Hayao Miyazaki’s My Neighbor Totoro.
For many years, Grave of the Fireflies has been expensive to purchase. However, thanks to the new release on July 8th, 2025, that expense is a thing of the past. As previously mentioned, it’s one of the offerings currently available at the SDCC Shout! Studios booth. And if you aren’t at SDCC, you can always snag a copy online.
There are plenty of other goodies available at the Shout! Studios booth in addition to Grave of the Fireflies. This includes several other Studio Ghibli steelbooks, like The Boy And The Heron and Howl’s Moving Castle. The offerings aren’t limited to Studio Ghibli, either. You can also get titles as varied as Bring It On: 25th Anniversary Edition, The Dark Crystal Limited Edition Collector’s Set and The Return of the Living Dead Limited Edition Steelbook.
In addition to home videos, there are also goodies like Labyrinth Enamel Pins and a Mystery Science Theater 3000 mini notebook. Will you be swinging by the Shout! Studios booth, or securing your copy of Grave of the Fireflies online? Be sure and let Comics Beat know, either here in the comment section or over on Bluesky.
Stay tuned to The Beat for more coverage from SDCC ’25.
