‘Orange is the New Black’ Star Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli File for Divorce

Samira Wiley and Lauren Morelli are parting ways.

Indeed, the Orange is the New Black actress and screenwriter—who first met in 2012 during production of the hit Netflix series—announced that they have decided to file for divorce after nine years of marriage.

"After nine years together we have decided to end our marriage,” the couple said in a statement to Out published Jan. 29. “However, our lifelong commitment to co-parenting will forever remain.”

The couple began dating in 2014, shortly after Lauren, 43, split from her then-husband Steve Basilone. Following the breakup, she opened up about exploring her sexuality while writing for Orange is the New Black, which follows multiple queer relationships.

“I realized I was gay in fall 2012, one of my first days on the set,” Lauren wrote in a 2014 essay for Identities.Mic of her experience working on the show. “Accordingly, I was nervous about the first love scene I’d written for Alex (played by Laura Prepon) and Piper (played by Taylor Schilling).”

“I loved writing it,” she continued, “loved watching a tenderness emerge in their relationship where passion always seemed to be the ruling principle, but by that time, I was so deep in my own self-doubt that I constantly felt like a fraud.”

Three years after the two connected romantically, The Handmaid’s Tale actress and Tales of the City producer tied the knot in Palm Springs, Calif. in 2017. Soon after, the pair welcomed their daughter George Elizabeth, 4, together.

After Lauren gave birth to their baby girl, Samira shed light on how their fertility journey tested their relationship.

"It really, I think, forced us in a good way to do some real looking at our relationship and ask questions we might not have if we were able to have a baby without this much planning," Samira told Entertainment Tonight in 2021. "I kept having this phrase, 'I want to create a soft space for this baby to land,' because I feel like there are so many babies that are born into families that are not ready for them.”

And while the couple may have decided to part ways, they knew from the very beginning that parenting their daughter would always be their top priority.

"I say to any couple—gay or straight—that's hoping to have a family to work on yourselves as a couple first," Samira explained. "And make sure you're ready that way, because the little boy or the little girl that you're going to have is going to need a soft, cushy place to land, and that's going to depend on your love for each other."

But Lauren and Samira aren’t the only pair that have decided to go their separate ways. Keep reading for more celeb couples that broke up recently.

Though the pair hadn’t confirmed their marriage after getting engaged in September 2025, the Bloody Valentine star's husband filed for divorce on Jan. 22, according to documents obtained by multiple outlets. That same day, Jaime revealed that she was "blindsided" by the investor's decision to abruptly end their marriage.

“I was completely blindsided by the divorce filing, which came out of nowhere,” the actress told Page Six in a statement published Jan. 22. “I was with Austin the night before it became public, and while like many marriages we had normal challenges, I genuinely believed we were working on our relationship.”

Jaime—who shares kids James and Leo with ex Kyle Newman—further shut down any suggestion of infidelity as a cause for the breakup, adding, “Any recent interactions being referenced publicly were strictly professional business meetings and have no connection to this private matter.”
