The New Orleans Saints are making some big changes this offseason already, with Travis Etienne Jr. and David Edwards signing on to fill out the left guard and running back needs.
While Alvin Kamara, Keandre Miller, Devin Neal, and Audric Estime are still in the RB room, the Saints are trying to improve the team moving forward for Tyler Shough. And the Saints aren't done adding to the RB room this offseason.
According to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the Saints are in agreement on a one-year contract with former Minnesota Vikings free agent running back Ty Chandler.
Saints to sign Ty Chandler to one-year deal
"The Saints are signing RB Ty Chandler, per source," Underhill reported on Tuesday afternoon.
Chandler is a 27-year-old running back who, back at the NFL Scouting Combine, ran a 4.38 40-yard-dash. He eventually was selected by the Vikings in the fifth-round in the 2022 NFL Draft, and put a few nice performances together now and then.
In his Vikings career, Chandler put up 710 total rushing yards with three total touchdowns on 181 attempts. This past season, in just three games played, Chandler had 47 rushing yards on 17 attempts.
As a receiver in his career, Chandler has 30 catches on 35 targets for 212 yards and no touchdowns. This past season, he caught three of four passes for 11 yards.
More: Alvin Kamara might retire if trade rumors with Saints come true
The best season of his career, by a significant margin, was his 2023 sophomore season. He ran the ball 102 times for 461 yards and three touchdowns with 21 catches on 25 targets for 159 yards.
While it's nothing too impressive, Chandler's 2023 production showed that he's at the very least a solid depth running back. This addition doesn't reveal too much about the Saints' plans, but it does add extra depth to an already deep RB room.
Chandler joins Etienne, Kamara, Miller, Estime, and Neal in the running back room in New Orleans. More changes will come for the Saints' RB room, including a potential cut or trade of Kamara, if the veteran RB doesn't retire.
