Saints get rid of QB connected to gambling amid intense competition for starting job

The New Orleans Saints have a full quarterback competition taking place this offseason.

They did get rid of one QB on Thursday, although it may not have been someone who had a real chance to win the starting job to begin with.

The Saints waived quarterback Hunter Dekkers, according to beat reporter Nick Underhill.

They actually cleared that roster spot to sign another punter, Kai Kroger.

Dekkers was an undrafted free agent signee by the Saints after their rookie minicamp in the spring. He's had a winding journey to this point.

In 2022, Dekkers led the Big 12 in completions and completion percentage while playing for Iowa State.

The 6-foot-3, 235-pound lefty was then indicted on charges related to sports gambling and stepped away from the Cyclones.

He resurfaced in 2024 and played for Iowa Western, a junior college.

With the Reivers, Dekkers went 11-2 with 3,806 passing yards and 32 passing touchdowns.

He went undrafted, but the Saints brought him to their rookie minicamp and signed him on May 12.

The Saints didn't need Dekkers in training camp anymore, though. They've got Spencer Rattler, Jake Haener and second-round rookie Tyler Shough getting all the reps to try and determine who the Week 1 starter will be.

Dekkers will have to hope he did enough in his time with the Saints to intrigue another team and get another opportunity at some point down the road. There could also be chances for Dekkers in a different professional league if the NFL doesn't keep him around.
