Sabres' plans with No. 4 pick? A trade might be in the works

The Buffalo Sabres just added the No. 4 overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft in the Bowen Byram trade earlier this week.

That creates some last-minute intrigue with the draft beginning on Friday night. Who are the Sabres going to pick?

Well, it might not be that simple.

Buffalo could still be trading for something else.

What are the Sabres' plans with 4th pick?

The Athletic's Scott Wheeler believes the Sabres could trade the fourth pick for something else.

It's been floated in speculation as a possible piece to entice the Maple Leafs to trade Matthew Knies, although there's nothing too concrete about that.

Wheeler quotes a source as saying, "Think they might use it for something."

It would make sense on the Sabres' timeline not to take someone who is too far away.

However, if they don't get any takers, it's not a bad spot on the board. They could probably get a top defenseman prospect at this spot.

Wheeler's mock draft has the Sabres taking Chase Reid if they stay put.

"Now, if they do make the pick and the forwards go 1-2-3 (and everything I’ve gathered has led me to believe that’s the most likely outcome), I’d bet that they’ll take one of the D, and Reid and Carels are the most likely," Wheeler writes. "And if it’s Reid, could righty Radim Mrtka, already in trade rumors, be on his way out as well?"

One way or the other, it seems the Sabres will be making more trades.
